There are possessive nouns (e.g., Peter&#8217;s book), possessive adjectives (my, his, their, etc.) and possessive pronouns (mine, ours, yours, etc.).<\/div>\n<p><a id=\"toc-3\" name=\"toc-3\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>In-depth Explanation<\/h2>\n<div class=\"explanation\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Possessives are most often used to show that somebody owns something \u2013 in other words, that something belongs to someone.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Sarah<strong>\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0dog\u00a0(the dog belongs to Sarah)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>My<\/strong>\u00a0backpack\u00a0(the backpack belongs to me)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The car is\u00a0<strong>hers<\/strong>.\u00a0(the car belongs to her)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Possessive can also show relationships:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Alex<strong>\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0brother\u00a0(the brother of Alex)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Sammy<strong>\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0mom\u00a0(the mom of Sammy)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>our<\/strong>\u00a0cousin<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You can tell that something is a possessive if you can rewrite it in one of these two ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>[object]\u00a0belongs to\u00a0[subject]<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>For example:<\/strong>\u00a0Mark\u2019s house\u00a0\u2192\u00a0the house belongs to Mark<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>[object] of [subject]\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>For example:<\/strong>\u00a0my sister\u2019s friend\u00a0\u2192\u00a0\u00a0the friend of my sister<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p><a id=\"toc-4\" name=\"toc-4\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Possessive Nouns<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Possessive nouns are formed either by adding an\u00a0<strong>apostrophe + s\u00a0<\/strong>to the end of the noun, or, for some nouns that end in -s,\u00a0<strong>just an apostrophe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"toc-5\" name=\"toc-5\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 dir=\"ltr\">\nSingular Possessive Nouns<\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For most singular nouns, add<strong>\u00a0\u2019s<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Kyle<strong>\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0homework<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Liz<strong>\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0party<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">the cat<strong>\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0food<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For singular nouns ending<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>in<strong>\u00a0-s<\/strong>, we usually add\u00a0<strong>\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0as well:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">James<strong>\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0class<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Jess<strong>\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0ring<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">the boss<strong>\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0desk<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"toc-6\" name=\"toc-6\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Plural Possessive Nouns<\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Most plural nouns end in -s already, so we simply\u00a0<strong>add an apostrophe<\/strong>\u00a0to show that the noun is now a possessive:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">the students<strong>\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0desks\u00a0(the desk belongs to more than one student)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">the teachers<strong>\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0room\u00a0(the room belongs to more than one teacher)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">the dogs<strong>\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0toys\u00a0(the toys belong to more than one dog)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For irregular plural nouns (those that don\u2019t end in -s), we again\u00a0<strong>add \u2019s<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">the children<strong>\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0books<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">the people<strong>\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0library<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">the women<strong>\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0bathroom<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Here is each type of possessive noun in a sentence:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I don\u2019t know what\u00a0<strong>New York City\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0weather is like.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Have you seen\u00a0<strong>Carlos\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0hat?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">All the\u00a0<strong>buses\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0doors are green.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The\u00a0<strong>men\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0soccer team just won their game.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"toc-7\" name=\"toc-7\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Possessive Adjectives<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Possessive adjectives are also called possessive determiners.
